1) My new track
goes together awful hard. Am I doing something wrong?
When putting new Lionel track together for
the first time, open the ends of the rails first by inserting one pin in the end
of a rail at one time. This will widen the rails enough so when you put
all three rails together, they will go together easier, while still maintaining
a good electrical connection. If you have MTH's Realtrax or Lionel
Fastrack, just push the two sections together until they "snap" into
place. 2) My trains slow
down toward the back end of my layout. Why is that?
That
is caused by loss of electricity, especially if you have one or more switches on
your rail line. Solve this by running feeder wires to another lockon where
your train slows down. Make sure you keep your ground and hot wires going
to the correct lockon terminals or you will have a dead short! 3) Why doesn't my
steamer smoke anymore? Does your steam
locomotive have a smoke unit in it? If so, do not let the smoke unit burn
dry! Doing so will burn up the smoke unit and will need to be
replaced. Keep smoke fluid in the unit at all times, even a few
drops before you store it away. If you don't want the smoke unit to
operate, look for an on/off switch, usually located on the locomotive. 4) Why doesn't my locomotive whistle or horn operate? Try flipping the wires from your transformer to the lockon. This will usually solve the problem. If not, does your locomotive have an on & off switch? It might especially if it is an electronic speaker type sound system. 5) My locomotive
doesn't sound like it did when it was new. Why is that? If
you have had your trains stored away for a year or more, do not run it until you
have checked it over and oiled/greased it as per instructions included with
locomotive. 6) The lights in my passenger cars flicker a lot. Why? Keep your track and wheels clean! You will find that they operate much better on clean track than dirty track. 7) My track is
rusty. Can I use steel wool to clean it? NEVER,
NEVER, NEVER use steel wool on ANY kind of toy
train!!!! We cannot emphasize it enough! Steel wool sheds like hair
and is extremely harmful to any model train! 8) My train shorts out somewhere when I turn on the transformer. What happened? First take all the cars and locomotive off the track. Check to see if it still shorts. If it does, examine the track closely. Check for tacks, track pins and other metal objects that may be under the track and touching the outside and center rails. If that does not help, check the wheels and axels on all of the rolling stock and locomotive for foreign metal objects. 9) I want to put
lights and accessories on my layout. Where do I hook them into the power?
Unless you have a large transformer like a Lionel
#1033, LW, KW or ZW, we recommend that you use another small transformer such as
the Lionel "Accessory Transformer". Do not hook up accessories
to the variable posts your train is hooked to. You will find that you
enjoy the layout more when your lights and accessories operate separately from
your train. 10) My couplers open when they are not supposed too. How can I fix them? Sometime the spring that holds the pin up into the coupler gets weak. There is not an easy way for me to explain how to fix that, so bring it in and I will show you or fix it for you.
